gaim and plugin

Hy.
I'm trying to get a gaim plugin to work but it just won't. The plugin is called autoprofile, and after i followed the instructions on how to compile it, the result was a filed called autoprofile.so which is supposed to go in gaim plugin directory such as prefix/lib/gaim or ~/.gaim/plugins. So i did copy the file in there but i get no autoprofile plugin in the preferences menu, and even more, gaim crashes with no error message (just dissapears).
Does anyone have any ideea on the subject ? Am i doing something wrong ?
