You're probably right. You might need to make an image of the filesystem, not the underlying device.
I don't know G4L, but you'd get the same message if you tried to mount your RAID partitions with "mount" instead of using mdadm, then mounting the RAID. So you probably have the wrong target for what you're trying to do. If the program cares about it being ntfs, then it's looking at the filesystem level.
