I was wondering, I really like the screenies I've seen of FVWM, however I like Gnome that I'm using presently, I think because it uses HAL, ie when I put a cd in a icon autmatically is placed on the desktop, and it is mounted. Right, so Gnome is a desktop manger, so can I use Gnome with FVWM and still use HAL? Is there something I'm missing?
hi,
It used to be quite common for poeple to use other window managers with gnome and kde
i thing gnome even used to have a ting in the configure to choose.
now since things are more complex it can be a little weird but it's worth a try
the idea is to just get fvwm running once as gnome wm and save session
try it like this (warning i don't use gnome)
run
gnome-session-properties&
in the second tab put the metacity style value to "Normal" then apply
then do
killall metacity; sleep 1; fvwm &
then if you get it either this way or some other way just save session on logout
then the next time you start gnome-session it should use fvwm
Honestly, why bother with FVWM? I used to actually hate gnmome and KDE Kwin- I much preferred FVWM, but FVWM has sat still all this time and both KDE/kwin and gnome have come such a long way that I can't see the sense of running fvwm on anything except possibly a thin client or PDA.
