Freezing with System program problem defected.

Using Ubuntu 14.04 on my HP pavilion notebook. Today I did about 500Mb of program updates and now when I reboot I get the logon screen and then a "System program problem detected" error message.
Nothing happens when I click Cancel our Report problem.

I have icons on the launcher but none work and I have no icons on the top bar, like the system icon. I get no response from anything I click on.

I did a "sudo rm /var/crash/*" which I saw on some forums. That got rid of the error pop up but the screen still freezes. I can crtl-alt into a terminal, log in and the last of my dmesg says:
ACPI Warning: \_SB_.PCIO.PEGO.PEGP._DSM: Argument #4 type mismatch - Found [Buffer], ACPI requires [Package] (20131115/nsarguments-95).

Any assistance would be appreciated.

that's ubuntu in a nutshell, heh.

sounds like some graphic driver problem?
some info about that might help.

you have to get into recovery mode, preferably without gui, and post some output:
Code:
lspci
sudo cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log* | grep -iE 'vga|video'
dmesg | grep -iE 'vga|video'
might be necessary to adjust the grepping, that's off the top of my head.

Ondoho,

Thanks for the reply. As it turned out it was a graphics driver problem. I was able to boot into recovery mode, change to a proprietary nVidia driver and then boot normally. I had been using the open source driver.

Thanks,

ogee

ACPI Warning: \_SB_.PCIO.PEGO.PEGP._DSM

I know this is necro-posting but I've got the same error when trying to run live usb and I can't resolve this. I've reverted to the Nvidia proprietary driver (for GT970M) but it made no difference. I notice that the screen is flickering before it stops on this error page, so it definitely feels graphics card related.

FYI running windows 8.1 and looking to just run live USB for now as installing on my second hdd had issues I couldn't resolve either.

Thanks,
Laggy
