Freeing the Sound Device Without Closing App

Hi,
I just ran into a situation where Firefox was using the sound device (I used lsof /dev/dsp and it gave me the PID of firefox) even though I had closed the tab that was playing back audio on /dev/dsp. So I was forced to close firefox to release the sound device. Is there any way ro release a busy sound card without terminating or shutting down the application in this case?. I'm currently using Firefox 1.06 with KDE 3.4. Thanks for your time.

try:

Code:
fuser -k /dev/dsp
and see if that will work.

Check if your sound chip as an alsa driver. You could get rid of this problem altogether

But this would kill the app that's using the sound card. I was trying to release the device without killing the app using the device. I think I'll have a look into the Alsa driver idea.
