Free NXServer Question

Some one installed the NoMachine NX server on my Centos5 box.

I really like using this from a remote site but it seems only to allow two users and what seems to have happened is that it isn't any two users but two users who have used it and logged in and that's seems to be it.

There is also a FreeNX which I heard of. Is this a completely free product of just the free two user verson of the NoMachine product.

Has anyone installed the actual FreeNX server?

I need something because now only the two original users can log in.

Thanks.

I think the reason only those two users can log in is because their sessions are still running. When you disconnect from a NX server session it is actually still running. You can simply reattach it later to pick up from where you left off (similar to Remote Desktop on Windows). You need to really kill their sessions in order to allow other users to login. The easiest way to ensure this is to make sure that

EnableAutokillSessions = "1"

in your server.cfg. You can also use nxkill to manually kill certain sessions. --help will show you the options.

With FreeNX I'm pretty sure you will have to use an older version of the NXclient. I have not had problems with the user number restriction that you are having currently, so I am not using FreeNX at this time. I'm sure that you should be able to find packages for your distro. The FreeNX site has a link for your distro but it seems like a dead one now.

Thanks for your responce.

What it actually turned out to be is that there were only two users in the the 'users.db' file.

I added in additional users as I needed them and then they were able to log in.

However, you are still limited to 2 people logging in at a time.

Thanks again.

NoMachine NX Server Connections

It sounds like your version of NoMachine NX Server is the Free Edition. Free Edition limits connections to two named users and two concurrent connections. In the case of the Free Edition, NoMachine limits the number of named users to two.

Free Edition NX Server users are stored in a username database maintained on the NX Server, and never more than two different names are allowed at a given time. It is possible to remove existing NX users and make room for new ones, but this is not a practical solution when many users are involved.

To clarify, NoMachine offers five different NX Server subscriptions:
  • Free Edition (Two connections, two users, unsupported)
  • Enterprise Desktop (Two connections, unlimited users, supported)
  • Small Business (Ten connections, ten users, supported)
  • Enterprise (Unlimited connections, unlimited users, supported)
  • Advanced (Unlimited connections, unlimited users, supported)
While FreeNX is built on the open source components of NoMachine NX, there is no relationship between NoMachine NX and FreeNX. NoMachine NX is commercially supported (by NoMachine); FreeNX is community supported. For a period of time, the FreeNX project used NoMachine's NX Client; however, advances in the true NX protocol (developed by NoMachine) make the current NX Client useless where FreeNX is concerned.
