Free CAD in Linux ?

I just want to know whether there is any open CAD software, like AutoCAD ProE, geared to linux? Thanks in advance, win2s

I think that you will find that because of it's proprietary nature, only Autocad is truly like Autocad.

I found QCad 1.5.1 (I think that's the last version under GPL) very usefull. It's a basic 2D CAD program sufficient for drafting and it has a library of standard parts (nuts, bolts,...)

If it is a 3d graphics manipulation tool you want try blender.

Well so far I have not tried any 3D OpenSource or free programs so I don't have an idea.

I've surfed the net a bit but so far I didn't see anything that would look usable. Offcourse threre might be something out there. The thing is that so far I did not have a real need for a 3D software that would be free so I haven't searched and tried that much.

What I would like to see is something with a allready built library of standard parts like bolts, screws, washers, pins,...., or atleast a possibility of building a library like that. Maybe it's a bit too much to look for, but you never know.

I'm a mechanical engineer and it's really boring to draw things like that from scratch all the time.

As for the QCad 1.5.1 I have mentioned it can be compared to AutoCad 14 or similar software. The drawing tools are OK, the printing is not so good because so far I haven't been able to get the printout in the exact scale of the drawing, allways a bit off. When saving documents do not try to make a new folder because the program crashes (the 1.5.1 version I have installed).

But all in all a very usable 2D CAD.

i think i should try the RPM specifically for your SuSe10 rather than making it from source (or vice versa if you already :))
