fontconfig problem

Hi there
I installed the 2.3.0 version of fontconfig from source , as it was written in the INSTALL file , then I found that I missed some fonts!! like Arial
for example : most of KDE applications apears with rectangles instead of characters
and then I must reinstall the original package from the RHEL 4 ( 2.2.3-7) and some font packages to fix the problem.

anyone else has the same problem?

How can I upgrade fontconfig without problems?

Thanks

This is interesting - Arial is a MS core font and proprietary (AFAIK) I'd be surprised if recent upgrades would include it. If you also upgraded KDE you will probably find it using bitstream vera sans or similar instead. (FC4 is like this.)

If you prefer the ms fonts, you can install them seperately.

Bistream Vera sans I think. Maybe luxi sans. Any "sans" font should look good.
I use gnome and would have to switch workspaces to check.

There should be a tool for customising the fonts. You probably cannot read it much, but you can select until you hit something that works.

I'm using ms comin sans from the ms ttf core fonts package. There may be a redirect in there.

You realise that as a RHEL user you are paying for support - what do the RH folk say?
