Fluxbox: looks very nice but...

Hi all!
Finally I was able to run Fluxbox! It's very nice, I like it a lot, but I have 2 problems: :(

1. It uses more RAM than I expected! Before to try fluxbox, I used XFce: the RAM usage of Fluxbox is like XFce! But Fluxbox is just a windowmanager, and not a desktop manager like XFce: so it should use less resources I think.. why it uses so much RAM like Xfce??

2. I've got a 1800+ AMD processor with ATI 8500LE: I installed the latest ATI drivers few days ago with XFce and the performance improved a lot.
But if I run glxgears for a little benchmark under XFce, I get about 2400 fps, instead running it under Fluxbox, I get 1400!!! Why using fluxbox I lose fps and perfomrance?

Probably I've done something wrong, or just I need to configurate something else... can you help me?

thanx in advance, bye!

Hi moly82!

I have found similar performances as yourself. I find XFce to be the best lightweight DE/WM out there. It has a slightly larger footprint but is coded so well that it actually chews less resources that the *box(es) et al.

I have tried them all and XFce is the real deal. Highly usable and very fast.

to be fair there are a lot of folks here that use flux/black/hacked box and they
seem to like them. Maybe someone could throw out some custom config that improves performance, but out of the box I believe xfce is the winner.

good luck.

Ciao BigNate! :)

yes XFce is very nice and good (easy-to-use, quick etc ), but as soon as I saw fluxbox working, I falled in love for it! :) :D

IMHO is better than XFce for the themes, colours etc (or maybe I can't find nice themes for XFce, I don't like them at all, and I can't find some good themes :( ).

what do you mean with "folks"? I can't understand very well, sorry but I'm italian! ;) :p

Someone can tell me how to improve the perfformance with fluxbox please? I think fluxbox could be the best desktop manager for me! I appreciate it a lot but I can't use it in this condition: with these low performance I can't play counter strike, ut2003 and so on! :D

looking forward for help!

ciao
Moly! :)

Sorry, :)

folks means people. Therefore in the sentence I used it means " lots of PEOPLE who use this forum also use fluxbox".

good luck with fluxbox!
