flash not working on real firefox. but working on iceweasal and epiphany

Flash is not working the the browser which I which to use, 'real' firefox, I wish to use firefox to sychcronise browsing with other devices.

I have epiphany and iceweasal also installed and flash is working having tested both on the bbc and if I check which version of flash i have installed at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html it says 11.1.102.62 (the lastest version) for both. I installed flash using 'flashplugin-nonfree'

This is on debian squeeze 64bit (Linux 2.6.39-bpo.2-amd64 (64-bit)) using gnome and I have installed real firefox in /opt using the instructions given here http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=62113

I understand that iceweasal and firefox are very similar and i tried to symlink iceweasal plugins to /opt/firefox/plugins but this seemed not to work.

Does anyone have any ideas I can get flash work have installed firefox in this manner?

Thanks

Tony

Iceweasel's plugins live in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. Did you try just copying the plugin files to /opt/firefox/plugins?

Also, where is Firefox pointing in Edit-->Preferences-->Applications for Flash?

It should just work.

See Tech Patterns :: Switching from Debian Iceweasel to Firefox, permanently : http://techpatterns.com/forums/about1435.html
try just symlinking the plugins:
Quote:
ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins /opt/firefox/plugins
BTW if you install a newer iceweasel from mozilla.debian.net it also has Sync and will work with Firefox on a Android phone or other "real" Firefox.

As my orginal post I've symlinked the plugins and it still does not work, firefox says that no plugins are installed. I've also get the same result when I cp /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins to /opt/firefox/plugings.

I also took a look at iceweasal's plugins and I noticed that it's flash plugin is pointing to HOME/.mozilla/plugins so I also tried symlinking and copying this to /opt/firefox/plugins and I still get the same result, no flash and firefox reports that no plugins are installed.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Tony

My flashplugin-nonfree sits in /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so. So I would take a look in there first to see if yours sits there also. My Antix install is pretty much pure Debian testing. This is a base AntiX install though.

Code:
harry@biker:~$ inxi -r

           deb http://liquorix.net/debian/ sid main
Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/jitsi.list
           deb http://download.jitsi.org/deb unstable/
harry@biker:~$ cat /etc/issue

As a test just now I just downloaded Firefox 10.02 .tar.bz2 and extracted it. I opened my rox file manager as root and moved extracted firefox file into /opt.

I run Iron browser and Iceape and Seamonkey 2.7.2 (sits in /home instead of /opt)

I ran Firefox with gexec
Code:
/opt/firefox/firefox
Checked
Code:
about:plugins
in Firefox search bar.

gxine starter plugin

File: gxineplugin.so
Version:
will start external gxine media player for embedded media streams

VLC Multimedia Plug-in

File: libvlcplugin.so
Version:
Version 1.1.12 The Luggage, copyright 1996-2007 The VideoLAN Team
http://www.videolan.org/

Shockwave Flash

File: libflashplayer.so
Version:
Shockwave Flash 11.1 r102

Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_26

File: libnpjp2.so
Version:
The next generation Java plug-in for Mozilla browsers.

Xine Plugin

File: xineplugin.so
Version:
Xine Plugin version 1.0.2, (c) The Xine Project.
Windows Media Player / RealPlayer / QuickTime compatible.

So I'm not sure why yours did not get picked up. No symlink or copying libflashplayer.so needed for this fresh install. I guess I'll make a launcher now for Fluxbox with my LXpanel for it since this hardrive has the room for it. Looks like it has a self updater in Help like Seamonkey does.

Maybe the problem is because I am using squeeze rather than sid or perhaps 64 bit rather than 32bit.

Any thoughts?

thanks

Tony

AHA and therein is the problem.

Did you download the 64bit Firefox as well as install flashplugin-nonfree from the Debian repos? If you did it should work.

Well I would have thought that mozilla would have been clever enough to offer me a 64-bit download, however running file -L /proc/pid/exe on my firefox process shows it to be 32 bit.

So I have replaced my 32 bit firefox with the 64 bit, nightly build of firefox and flash is now working. However, not sure how secure the nightly build is, which was another reason for trying to use an up-to-date and stable version of firefox.

Anyway, thanks for all you help

Tony
