Flash/Firefox - Excessive CPU usage and render issues

Hello,

Sorry if I might be beating a dead horse, but I've run into some issues with Flash under my Ubuntu systems. Essentially, what I'm seeing happen with flash videos/applications is a near-immediate spike in CPU usage (0-5% to 90-100%) and problems with rendering (flickering, segments of the applet go black, and so on). In some instances, Firefox goes a bit wacky--the mouse cursor locks to a single row, the window scrolls vertically at random, and the page either refreshes or goes back at least one in the history.

Overall, I've run into this issue since the Ubuntu 6.04 LTS release (including 8.10, 9.04, and now 9.10); covering various versions of Firefox. None of my Windows systems running equivalent versions of Firefox have run into problems. While Flash seems to be a perennial issue with Linux systems, it remains practically unusable for anything other than a low-quality video--forget anything requesting user input. Is there any sort of workaround that gets things running smoothly?

Hi -

Personally, I haven't experienced the problem: although I know it's very real. Maybe I'm just not looking at the right Flash examples

Here's one possible option:

Here's another good possibility:

I had the exact same problem with my toshiba laptop ,
Two things that i did to increase performance.
Installed an older version of flash 9.0.48

I also found that powernowd was incompatible with my system.
when i disabled powernowd from running at startup all my flash ( and gnometris)worked perfectly.
i installed a different power management program , i forget which one.
I'm sure you can find lots of other options, too (including trying Flash with a different browser).

By all means, please post back if you find something that works for you!

'Hope that helps .. PSM
