First time compiler...

Hey all

Linux newbie here. I am trying to compile a plugin for xmms. This is my first attempt
at this although I was once a programmer for food.

The instructions say the first step is to run ./configure, this reports that it is not found.
Is there something I need to do first to setup a compilation environment?

cheers

make sure you have unpacked the plugin file. "tar xvvzf <filename>" if it's a tar.gz file. cd into the directory that's just been created by the unpacking with "cd <directoryname>". that's where the "configure" should be located. in that directory, "./configure" and see if it works.

Hmmm, that's what I did. Are you saying that generally in a package like this, there will be a configure script?
I'll go back to the archive tonight and check it again.

cheers

yes, generally there is a configure script within the directory created from unpacking the tar.gz file. if it's not that way, look in the directory created for a file called INSTALL and read it to get instructions on installing. the README file is probably worth looking at as well. online documentation can help also.
