Firestarter wizard doesn't start

I just installed Debian Firestarter 1.0.3 in Sarge on 2.6.8 kernel and the wizard won't start. I installed it with aptitude so I think all the dependencies are satisfied. I'm using GDM 2.6.0.8 and I get the prompt for root password, which I enter correctly, then nothing.

What's missing?

Figured it out: Starting it with the default properties (gksu -c /usr/sbin/firestarter) DOES NOT work, even though both users I tried with are in /etc/sudoers AND I entered the correct password. Once I logged into Gnome as root the wizard started up.

That's crappy software design and non-existent QA. One of the most important things about any software package is the first thing that happens when you unwrap it, and Firestarter failed to say what the doc said it would do. Shame.

Addendum - Upon further review the firewall itself is EXCELLENT. It's bad packaging by Debian in that they use 'gksu'. The Firestarter manual has the correct instructions to execute using sudo after updating the /etc/sudoers file.
