Firestarter monitoring firewall events w/o interfering with rules?

Hi there!

I'm kind of a newbie in firewall matters so i'm hoping that i can get some help ;-)
I'm configuring a firewall on a ubuntu v8.10 machine. Installed Firestarter but soon came face-to-face with the fact that there were certain rules that i needed to add which would be much easier to add using iptables. After booting the machine and running the "iptables -L" command, the iptables appear correctly, as they should, independently of running a script file with my rules on boot or not. But when Firestarter is started, it does seem to populate the iptables with it's own rules, overriding the ones i added.
Question is, how can i use Firestarter to just monitor the firewall events without interfering with my rules?

Thanks in advance,
Jackie
