Firefox wont open / high CPU useage...

Hi all,

Linux Slackware 10.2
AMD K6-2 550Mhz
162 megs ram
KDE desktop GUI

I am having two problems, first is that KDE "System Monitor" is saying that the CPU utilization is between 26 and 31%, shouldn't this be down around 1 to 3% ?

Second problem is that I downloaded and installed Firefox version 1.5 yesterday, the install from the TAR file seemed to go fine, the "installation log file" said that the installation was sucessfull. When I clicked on it from the folder that is was installed in it would open, if I copied the icon to the Desktop it would not open.

I have logged off, rebooted, and shut the PC off but it still would not open from the desktop.

I shut it down and gave up then tried it again today, now it will not open from either place. The Konqueor browser that came with the OS and the older version of Mozilla that I installed several months ago both open on the first try.

System Monitor says that USED MEMORY = 54.1 of 155 megs ram.
SWAP = 0 of 957 megs.

I think the high CPU usage and the problem with Firefox might be related but I'm not sure.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to LQ!

Slackware-10.2 comes with Firefox-1.0.6 by default. Did you try to run it before installing v1.5?

You can download Firefox-1.5.0.4 from this mirror or another one closer to you, and install it by issuing "installpkg mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.4-i686-1.tgz" and use an official, properly installed Slackware version. That one is more up-to-date than your version, and therefore has some new security patches.

As for what's leeching your CPU, issue in a terminal "top" and that will show up.

Firefox...

Hi Chinaman,

Thank you for the suggestions.

I downloaded the file from the mirror that you posted, the install worked fine and Firefox loaded on the first try, the previous version of 1.5 that I downloaded was from the official Firefox site, I'm not sure why it didn't work.

I ran TOP from the console, it says that I have 4 megs of ram free, I think I need to get more ram. I'm more likely to trust a command line option than a little piece of KDE software that someone wrote.

The version of Slackware that I have was created from ISO files that were downloaded directly from the Slackware.org website, the OS has been running fine for months. I have had very few problems with it.

Thanks again!

Firefox...

Hi again,

Yes Slackware came with Firefox-1.0.6 but some websites no longer supported it and said that I needed to get a newer version of Firefox before they would allow the page to load.

From the Program Menu and from the executable file that is buried in one of the directories I am able to start Firefox, but if I copy the icon to the Desktop it will not load, the hard drive light flashes once and that is all that happens.

I don't mind doing it the long way, its just that one of my users would rather do it from the Desktop.

Help!

I don't see why clicking on the desktop icon would be a problem. Check the properties of that icon and make sure of the command, and make sure the path to that command is in the user's path. You can check by issuing "$PATH" as user, which will tell you the directories in that logged in user's path. Then you can issue "which firefox" which will show you the path to the Firefox executable. By default in Slackware that should be "/usr/bin/firefox". If that is where your Firefox-1.5.0.4 is located, try putting the full path in the command line in the icon's properties.

Hi,

I copied the icon from the /usr/bin/firefox/ location (I had copied it from somewhere else) it works fine now.

Thanks!
