satimis, probably easiest to tell us exactly why you need to update the "firmware" for firefox? What is it that you are trying to achieve?

Cheers

Or sorry

I need to upgrade the firmware of TP-Link router.

I download the zip file on Internet. After extracting it there are 3 files
- How to upgrade TP-LINK Wireless N Router&AP(192.168.0.1 version).pdf (attached snapshot)
- Release note.txt
- wr740nv4_en_3_12_11_up(120320).bin

According to the instruction on the .pdf file they advise upgrade the firmware on browser via
-> Tools -> Firmware Upgrade

But I couldn't find the tab "Firmware Upgrade"

Thanks.

Remark:
I couldn't attach the .pdf file here because the file size.

The tabs referred to are those on the router's main menu,
  • enter the address of your router (this may be 192.168.1.0 but check the underside of your router) into a browser
  • then username/password (check the TP-LINK doco)
  • on the left side you will see either "tools" or "system tools", click on this
  • hey presto - "firmware upgrade" is the 2nd option
I'll let you follow the instructions from there.

Hi,

Thanks for your link.

However on click Step 1
http://www.tplink.com/test/download-....html#!/0/5052

"For Home" + "Home Network" + "Routers" + "Wi-Fi Routers" -> click "GO"
It only turned without displaying the Page.

However I found my router
150M Wireless Lite N Router
Model No. TL-WR740N

On
http://www.tp-link.com/en/download-center.html
and
http://www.tp-link.com/en/download/TL-WR740N.html

Select V5
-> Firmware
http://www.tp-link.com/en/download/T....html#Firmware

Select
TL-WR740N_V5_150312
Operating System
Win2000/XP/2003/Vista/7/8/Mac/Linux

Download TL-WR740N_V5_150312
After extracting it, there are 2 files;
How to upgrade TP-LINK Wireless N Router&AP(192.168.0.1 version).pdf
wr740nv5_wr741ndv5_en_3_16_9_up_boot(150312).bin

(Remark: the current version installed - 3.16.5 Build 130520 Rel.62568n)

I suppose it is the latest version?

The original page of the router is displayed in Chinese, after login on browser "192.168.0.1"

I couldn't find the tab for backup the current firmware installed on the router. But I found a tab under "Tools" -> "Restore Factory Setting"

I suppose it will reset to the original firmware coming with the router in case if upgrade failure?

Regards
satimis

Yes, looks like that is the latest version.
Factory reset will not restore firmware but reset configuration to the official default setting.

Hi,

There is another tab on the "Factory Reset" page in Chinese

Following tab is available;
Backup setting file -> Backup setting (clicking it)
download a file;
config.bin

I don't know whether it is the factory built firmware, coming with the router.

Their agent here is very inefficient. I called them 3 times asking for the new firmware without result. They only replied will send it on email. Also I have sent them an email but without reply.

I think I have to contact them again after the Easter Holidays

Regards

I do not know if Easter Holiday exists in China.
Do not mix the config and firmware. Config contains all your settings, but not the firmware itself. You can save your settings and restore it, that is config.bin.
Firmware can be donwloaded from the net and installed on the router, but cannot be backed up (you can always try to [re]install another firmware). Factory reset means restore the default config and did not modify the running firmware.

It is here in Hong Kong.

I'll wait for the reply from their agent. In the worst case, if anything going wrong I just buy another router which is inexpensive.

Several years ago I have tried installing pfsense as router.

https://www.pfsense.org/

but not successful.

I ran pfsense in a VM of VirtualBox routing the traffic to other VMs. It worked. But I couldn't make it connect the host. Besides I couldn't route the traffic to another PC. Finally I gave up.
