firefox - strange popups

during the last two weeks a new fenomenon with firefox occured that becomes ever more frequent: popups that, if closed, will close the application, too. some are empty, some show frames. they are not reproduceable. three screenshots:
accessing a german forum, trying to read norwegian news and, finally, trying to post about this failure in linuxquestions.org. when this failure occurs, the computer will slow down significantly.

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; nb-NO; rv:1.8.0.3) Gecko/20060425 SUSE/1.5.0.3-7 Firefox/1.5.0.3

upgrade might always be a solution, but i don't always find it too easy. e.g. importing bookmarks in firefox will always need some work afterwards.

First of all I think you're lagging behind two FF releases, no that that would fix your problem but updating FF should prove beneficial anyway. Next check if you have the FF Noscript extension, it's a must really for selective disabling of Javascript. If that doesn't stop FF crashing and then you may have to resort to more radical measures like disabling Java, Javascript, Flash and such or use a filtering proxy like Privoxy.

thank you for your comprehensive answer, i'll try "noscript" first. are their any scripts i might want to have that may be filtered away by this extension?

No it filters by site. If that is not enough then check or uncheck global preferences in the FF "content" tab like blocking popups, Java and Javascript "useless" crap like raise/lower windows, disable context menu's and hide status bar and don't forget to check Noscript's "advanced" tab.
