Firefox: slooooww!!! how to speed up?

I've got Firefox 1.0.
I use kde 3.4 (compiled by me), slackware 10.0 and a custom 2.6.11-ck2 kernel (compiled by me), konqueror easily loads in 6 or 7 seconds

Loading firefox and thunderbird (just after starting up the system) at the same time takes over 30 seconds!
How can I speed it up?
Is it the GTK toolkit that takes so long or what??

Can someone give me a step-by-step guid to compiling it? I'm pretty sure this would speed things up..

Cheers
Forrest

but if you are having this problem with official binaries, i doubt compiling your own firefox will help...

it seems to me like there is some other underlying issue for your 30 second startup time...

Well, running 10.2 with kernel 2.6.15, KDE 3.5 and with all the latest QT and GTK libs compiled on this machine nets me about a 7 second thunderbird statup time. This machine is nothing great at 1.7 pent M and 512 pc2700, with a 5200 rpm drive. I would say you may have some other issues, have you checked DMA?

And for other information on my machine, I am running X11 6.9 with hardware accel enabled, which helps the draw speed a bit.

There are quite a few things that can slow down an application start. You may want to read around a bit before putting in the time to compile firefox.
