Firefox install location
Hello all,
I'm new to these forums but they sound like a good place to exchange tips. I'm also new with basic system administration in Linux, so bear with me :) When I download Firefox, I extract the program files into a temporary directory. I think I should be moving these files somewhere more logical than my home directory (~), but I don't know what the convention is. Once it's installed there, should I create a symbolic link to the executable in the /bin directory? Just guessing here... I want to be able to simply type "firefox" at the command prompt and have the browser launch. This seems like the proper way to install a program anyways, but correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks! |
well just extract it to wherever you wish .. it dont' matter
i personally have mine at /usr/local/bin/firefox ... and instead of making links, you can simply add the location of where you are putting firefox to your PATH, for you can just type 'firefox' ... |
Thanks,
Another basic question to follow up: when you say PATH, I think you mean editing what's written when I type "env". There I have: PATH=/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/loom0027/bin Can I edit this file and just add ":/usr/local/bin/firefox" ? |
Nevermind, I got it working now. Thanks again.
