Firefox flash videos no longer play sound
I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 - Intrepid.
I did an update (from the Update Manager) which was meant to update the Flash plug-in for Firefox. However, it started downloading something from Adobe's site (really slowly - or stalled) and after a while I terminated it.
Now, videos on Youtube play, but without sound. If I play the actual video from /tmp, it is fine, so it is the Firefox plug-in that must be broken.
I tried to uninstall the plug-in, but it tells me it is "unable to get an exclusive lock". I go into a shell and do "sudo dpkg --configure -a" and get "Status database area is locked by another process".
Running out of options here. Should I uninstall Firefox completely, then download and install it from Mozilla's site? Considering I'm running Intrepid, I would be installing a different version from that supplied with Intrepid.
Surely I can fix this minor annoyance without such drastic measures?
