FireFox eats 98% of my CPU

Hello hello!

I run a local news portal for my home town of Athens. We decided to use PHPNuke instead of reinventing the wheel. Well after the first couple of months we received so many email from our users about how cryptic our "submit news" module was I.E. you had to know HTML in order to format anything or even add a URL. I decided to use FCKeditor 2.0 FC Preview to replace our news module.

Well it works like a charm minus one small problem. When I try to use it at home running FC3 with Fire Fox it locks up my PC every single time. It only happens when I try to add a URL or any feature that requires the editor to open a pop up window.

I have to SSH from another box to kill Fire Fox. This also happens with Netscape and Mozilla.

Could someone give it a try http://athens101.com/modules.php?name=FCKeditor and see if it does the same thing?

It really burns me since it works just dandy on my NT4 box.

I asked on the forums from the site that released it but all I get is "what be this lee-nux thing you speak of"

Just tried it with my firefox for you and only had 98% cpu usage by firefox for a few seconds while loading all of the scripts and things on the page, but after that dropped down again. I know if you have too many graphics and scripts, etc. a system may be bogged down, but not a newer processor. I was having trouble on my 400 MHz machine looking at a site with a moving background created in frontpage, but again just the scripts used, and the processor. Maybe, you can "clean up" the page a little less graphics (since it is just for posting information). Save the eye-candy for when the viewer is looking at something that requires it on the sire.

Don't know if this helps, and I don't know if it is your processor. Has anyone else complained about the site being slow or is just on your machine for some reason? Just a good place to start looking.

Hope you get that cleared up,

Alunduil

Just tested with Opera on Suse 9.2 and everything runs too quick to get a CPU usage :D

Looks like we're back to a local machine issue then, start running top before you load the site and see what happens. Also, could it be your hardware? (Probably not, but you know eliminate everything you can.)

It's good to know it did not lock anyones PC. I was afraid that it might be just my box :(

I don't think it's a power problem AMD64 2800+ 500mb ram Nvidia ti4200. I think it may be a problem with the new nvidia drivers. Or when last I ran "yum" it for some reason upgraded my system to Fedora Test 4.

Did anyone try to add a smiley or URL in the story text? That is what causes my system to lock.

I can open another terminal and run top and firefox-bin just sits @ 98%

I had a trouble like this...
I really not know what happened, it's a little strange
but I solve it by compilling and installing Firefox again

After doing it, I didn't get high CPU usages again
