Firefox Download Problems

With most downloads in Firefox, they never seem to finish. It's more like they rarely get started. Most times, when I try to download a file, it completes instantly as a 0 byte text file. If I right click and choose "Save as...", then it works, but that's the only way. It only downloads if I don't use Firefox's built in download prompt. It's very annoying to do it this way instead of just clicking on it and using the Firefox prompt.

One other thing that bothers me: When they do work with the Firefox prompt, they often save with a .bin extension added to the end. For example: "filename.zip" saves as "filename.zip.bin". This is also very annoying.

Can anyone please help me with my problems?

Does this happen from a variety of sites, or only one? Also, do you have any extensions enabled? There are some download manager extensions that I've seen horribly screw up FF downloads.

Download Status Bar is the only download-related Firefox extension I have.

It's been happening more on one site than others, but it does happen on others.

Try running firefox in "safe mode" and see if the behavior persists. Also, which FF version are you on?

The behavior persists, even in Safe Mode.

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.3.

I have a similar problem, with Firefox 2.0.4 on Gentoo Linux. Most download work, while some get me a zero-length file, both if i click directly on the link and if I choose "Save as". At the moment I cannot tell which kind of downloads don't work.

Then I have the ANNOYING problem of the .bin extension added to EVERY binary download (except, perhaps, for "known" extension, which are in general managed by plugins or I-don't-know-how). Any new clues, in the last 2 months?
