Firefox cannot run (start and exit within 2 secs) with root account

When I'm in root, I can't run firefox-mozilla. From xterm, I type firefox&. Press Enter twice and a Exit message is shown. However, when I logout of root account and started firefox with my normal user account, it run fine.

Any reason why?

Thanks !
PS Debian 'Sarge'

Cos I'm curious about the difference in the way Debian and Redhat work. In redhat, it works.

In the console:

david:/etc/init.d# firefox&
[1] 629
david:/etc/init.d#
[1]+ Exit 1 firefox
david:/etc/init.d#

Thanks !

Yes, I tried. It just stays at the command prompt without launching firefox.

Have you got the hidden folder .pheonix of your root tree.? Install Firefox as root, as well as user.
