Firefox browse box - view details

Hello,
In windows explorer the user is given the option to choose the view of the files. I want to have the same option in Firefox and other GTK (I think) based apps. Now when I right click on an image and choose "Save image as" I get very simple browse box - directory path on the top, couple of bookmarks on the left and only Filename and Last modified in the main box. I want to see the size of the files and be able to sort on it.
Any idea if that is possible?

No way around that.

The gtk file dialogs suck, that's a well known fact. But no one seems interested in fixing that. It's one of the areas where kdelib based applications are ahead.

It's not only useless when looking for images. It has many other problems. As you also highlighted above, they lack a way to sort files in other ways than the default. It's also really slow when opening directories with lots of files (more than it should, mc or kdelib based apps can open these instantly).

I can't really say why this haven't got the attention that it deserves.

By the way, firefox can be compiled to use a custom file dialog instead of the gtk one, though it's really not any better.

PS. I remember using in the past something called kgtk, you can find it in kde-apps.org if your distro has not a package for it. It allows you to substitute the gtk file chooser with the kdelibs one for some applications. However it's just a dirty hack. It won't work always, and I have experienced some hasty problems with it in several applications (like gxine for example).
