Firefox and cyrillic characters!

I'm having trouble displaying cyrillic (russian) characters with firefox on my Slack 10 machine. Windows shows cyrillic in firefox without any problems. However mozilla, firefox, konqueror all show some egyptian looking squares (almost like dominoes) instead of cyrillic letters. I'm wondering what can i do to fix this linux-firefox issue? Thanks

P.S."Nestcape displays the cyrillic characters fine."

I had the similar problem, and I happen to load dropline gnome http://www.dropline.net/gnome I don't use gnome at all I just wanted to see how slaggish my system will be :) - and to my surprise, after install I could read russian news on http://lenta.ru, etc.
If you are not to concerned about gnome and you have a spare disk space give dropline a shot - you might like it after all.

well, i tried using gnome and same problem still exists. Is dropline gnome different than gnome? Is there any other way to fix this problem?
