Firefox and CSS - any way to make it work?
 

OK, I'm *sure* someone else has asked this question before, but after searching for "Firefox" and "CSS" I came up with very little and if I went through and read every post that has the subject line "Firefox Issues" or "Problem with Firefox" it'd take me all freakin day and I probably still wouldn't find it.

My question is this... is there any way to make sites formatted with CSS display properly in Firefox? I luv Firefox, it's the best browser I've found so far, but I find it *really* irritating that style sheets don't work.

If this is just impossible, can I ask what other browser *would* display the sites properly. I've tried viewing in Konqueror and Epiphany and neither worked.

Okay you are clearly way too drunk to be using a computer at the moment.

Firefox is standards-compliant and will render web sites that use stylesheets exceptionally well. First question to throw back at you, do you know what a stylesheet is? Post a screenshot of this site open in Firefox if you like so we can see whether CSS rendering is working or not.

Second, sorry if the question was unwarranted but I just went to view a friends' new site and it didn't display properly. I informed the webmaster about it and she told me that the site wouldn't display in Firefox because Firefox didn't work well with style sheets. I did, by the way, shoot one back to her saying that that seemed really strange since I've never had an issue with it before. She assured me that that was the problem. So I came here and asked.

And yes, I do know what a style sheet is (I don't make websites personally but I do understand what it is and and what it does) but after being assured by the person who created the site that that was the issue, what else was I to do but ask? I mean, yes I had doubts but I sort of assumed that she knew what she was on about.

If what you say is true (which I'm sure it is) then I'll email her again and attempt to convince her that that isn't the problem. I don't know that I'll have much luck though. She seems pretty sure of herself. Maybe I'll quote your reply....

Most likely she wrote the css file to make the site render correctly in IE. IE doesn't follow standards very well, so you have to use hacks to set things right. Very often I see sites that import an additional stylesheet if the browser is IE to implement these hacks. Personally I try to use only the CSS that is supported by IE, firefox and Opera

hehe.. I'll pass that information on to her. I don't think she'll be very happy to hear it. In my conversation with her she said she's made six other sites that don't work with Firefox either (this helped to convince me that Firefox was the problem in the first place), so I guess she's been doing it that way for a while. :)

Drop us a link to the site an we'll probably be able to identify where the problem is. There are a lot of CSS hacks getting around for IE but most of the hacks take into account the other browsers as well which is half the reason they tend to be quite complicated.

edit: um, I just posted the link a couple of minutes ago and then I realised I should maybe ask Sammy (the girl who owns the site) if she wants the help first. She's online now, so I'll ask her and get back to you in a minute.

OK, so Sammy appears to have either disappeared again, or is just not checking her email, so rather than letting the topic become days old and risk losing your kind attention, I'll just post the link anyway and if she turns around and says she doesn't want the help, then I just won't pass on any advice. *g*

The issue is that the text is apparently supposed to be white on a black background but is only displaying as black on black. (Interestingly enough, Epiphany discards the background altogether and just displays black text.) Anyhoo...

If you can help at all, I'm sure Sammy'd really appreciate it. (It's her site, and she's quite young, so probably unwilling to demand anything from the girl who made it. If you guys can see what the problem is tho, then I'll tell the webmaster myself.)


btw, don't mind the content. *g* Sammy's about 15 and something of a twisted fan-girl. Though I love her dearly, her taste leaves something to be desired. LOL!

There are quite a few things wrong with that CSS, I think the best thing to do is point her to this site http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ which will show her the errors.

I suspect it is to do with the fact that the text is in a an iframe, and using "'"s around the color values.

Also there is no need for the html <style> tag in the css file, and I am unsure of the effect of using html comment start and end tags in the css file.

Just came by to take down the link to the site (since I don't think the owner wants it plastered on a linux forum for all time *g*) and pass on Sammy's thanks, for all your help. I've been playing around with the CSS and while I think it's probably still far from being perfect or even correct, at least the text is now displaying the way it should. Meanwhile, Sammy's found herself another webmaster, who's gonna go thru the site and fix every page. *g* So all is well.
