Firefox and choosing applications for files

Where does Firefox store settings for different file types, e.g. which program to use to open a file of certain type? I've tried to search for those settings but can't find anything useful. Nothing useful in about:config.

My problem (small but incredibly annoying) is that I'm unable to get plain text files to open in Kate instead of gedit:

I have tried to choose Other, then find Kate, to no avail. I have even set Kate as the default program in Firefox settings menu, under Applications tab, but it still shows only gedit, nothing else. It doesn't even retain Kate in the list which seems very retarded, as well as the fact that you must manually find the application instead of just picking it from a list.

Distro: LMDE, 64bit
DE: Xfce
Firefox version: 18.0.2

Ack. after a review... have you tried a new firefox profile? My "kate" is similarly greyed-out,but I don't use kate.
