Firefox 1.0PR loses my settings on a restart

I have gotten firefox 1.0PR via gentoo portage. However, while I can change personal settings successfully (not to show the "firefox has blocked a popup message", config for my gmail notifier extension etc.), if I close and open it again then it reverts to the default settings. Why could this be?

EDIT: If I open edit -> preferences, change something and exit, I get a messagebox: "Failed to save the preferences file. Any preference changes will be lost at the end of this session." - How can I get a better error message? It doesn't appear on the console if I start firefox from it. I thought I'd left the 'not enough information' errors behind with windows...

Did you ever figure this out? I've got the same issue.

Firefox won't remember any settings or bookmarks. Thunderbird is fine.

Code:
[tristan@mybox tristan]$ ls -la .firefox
ls: .firefox: No such file or directory

[tristan@mybox tristan]$ ls -la .mozilla
total 28
drwxrwxr-x 4 tristan tristan 4096 Apr 25 18:21 ./
drwxr-xr-x 34 tristan tristan 4096 Apr 30 17:23 ../
-rw-rw-r-- 1 tristan tristan 335 Apr 25 11:29 appreg
drwxrwxr-x 3 tristan tristan 4096 Apr 25 11:29 firefox/
-rw-rw-r-- 1 tristan tristan 6919 Apr 26 19:46 mozver.dat
drwxr-xr-x 2 tristan tristan 4096 Apr 25 18:21 plugins/
Cheers
