Firefox 0.9.1 and Realplayer

Hi,

I've got RealPlayer 8 with the 9 codecs installed and it plays streaming video and audio in Mozilla no problem. However I recently put Firefox on my system, it's version 0.9.1 compiled with gcc 3.3.4 according to the about:buildconfig.

Anyway the realplayer plugin is in the plugin directory, but I've been hearing that the realplayer plugin will not work with firefox compiled with gcc 3.3.4 has anybody got it to work, or is there another workaround?

Thanks

Works for me. I put a symbolic link in /usr/bin pointing at /usr/local/RealPlayer8/realplay and I copied the rpnp.so plugin into $HOME/.mozilla/plugins (that folder didn't exist until I made it) and it works for both Mozilla and Firefox.

Hi Kadett,
take a look at the Plugindocs.

It hints at this workaround. I have tried it before and remember that it worked for me.

Or another thing to try (albeit very much more work and more difficult) is to recompile Firefox with gcc 2.9x. I wouldnt go that way though.

Also, consider using the Helix Player (Real's open source successor to the (obviously failed) RealOne port). There are installation instructions for the plugin.

Good luck,

Follow up and solution for others.

Drowstar, thanks for the lead to HelixPlayer, in fact to get the streaming real video to work in Firefox 0.9.1 you need to get the RealPlayer 10 beta, because HelixPlayer will only play open source file formats such as Vorbis and Theora. But the RealPlayer 10 works absolutely no problem in Firefox built on gcc 3.3.2. Of course now I have both HelixPlayer and RealPlayer so you can use both for different purposes. Anyway again thanks for the help Drowstar and if anybody else has this issue it is important to note that RealPlayer8 will not work in Firefox built on gcc 3.3.2, you need to get RealPlayer 10, which obviously I didn't know.
