firebird and java

java does not work in firebird, it's that simple. whenever i try to use a java applet, i get the "need xx plugin" dialog, specifically "application/x-java=applet". the ok button directs me to sun's site to download j2se, but i've already done that, and i've also confirmed that java is working, since it works with openoffice.org. i don't know if it is because it is cvs or what, but it doesn't work. i've tried everything i could find on the topic, but it seems that most people are concerned with getting it working with mozilla. that said, i've tried making the symbolic links: libjavaplugin_oji.so ->
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

that symlink is in /usr/local/firebird/plugin. i've tried symlinks to the other plugin versions as well, so there's got to be something else to it. i've also tried using the xpi from texturizer.net. i was excited when i found that, but it didn't work. aboutlugins shows no java anything.

thanks,
andrew
