finding most recent file


what is the easiest way/command for finding the most recent file of a certain name/type located in a certain directory. (specifically file with name p*) thanks

Its in the man pages you know: http://man.linuxquestions.org/index....ction=0&type=2

I believe you can use -ctime in your find command, etc.

yeah, thanks. i already new about the find command but i was looking for something that didn't require a specific number of days (latest of all instead of the lastest within x days. espcially since there is no specific known x in my case) i could probably do it still in a round about way....i was just hoping there was a slightly more direct approach.

I don't know then what your really looking for then. To me if your searching for files, you have to use find, locate or any other search command to find a file, just with particular options passed to narrow down what your looking for.

Maybe you can create your own script to suit your needs, that's what I would do...
