finding and identifying programs

using fedora 4 and sourceforge

I'm having trouble finding programs is there a search function in the file browser?
for example I know I have Xine but I can't find it in the directory

also is there a way to list the programs currently loaded?
I have great difficulty determining programs from files
and when I do find a program I have difficulty knowing what it does
and what is necessary vs an ad on
I think Yum has a feature for this but can't figure it out?

The quickest, easiest way I know of is in the console type:

whereis nameofprogram

Not too sure about Fedora, but I have KPackage installed in Slackware. It is a GUI for installing and removing packages. I only use it to remember what is installed, plus it usually gives a good description as well. Someone told me it was a KDE program. It was already loaded when I installed Slackware.

It is a GUI for installpkg, removepkg, etc. If Fedora uses something else that might not help you.
