Files in Desktop folder don't appear on Desktop

I'm using Mandriva 2005 LE with KDE 3.3.

Some files I downloaded to the Desktop folder don't appear on the actual desktop, even though they are visible when I browse ~/Desktop folder in Konqueror. Any idea why certain files don't appear on the desktop? It only effects some files, and I haven't found any pattern so far.

I've seen a bug where if I create a file from the command line, kdesktop doesn't seem to recognize that there is a new file. I'm not sure if this is a bug.

Try killing kdesktop by running "xkill" and clicking on the desktop. Then restore it by running "kdesktop". See if that gets the files to show?

One other suggestion, is it a hidden file? (.file) Do you have KDE to show hidden files on desktop?

No, these weren't hidden files.

It hasn't happened again since I posted this, but if it does then I'll try killing KDesktop as
timcharper siggested. Would logging out and back in have the same effect as killing and re-launching KDesktop?
