File in Trash crashes my system

There is a file in my trash can that when I try and empty trash, crashes the entire system. The file in trash SAYS it is 4.2 terrabytes, which is highly unlikely as it is a 120 gig hard drive. Any ideas what would cause this?

The filename was just random numbers with no extension.

Even as root it crashes the system. I finally had to resort to making a backup, then reformatting and reinstalling.

Also, the file only shows up in the trash can. It doesn't appear in the folder it supposedly was/is in and doesn't start with a . so it isn't a hidden file, although we showed hidden files as well and it still didn't appear.
