fetchmail socket error and certificate verification

Hello all,

This problem just showed up today or well at 1 or so aim this morning and I am trying to resolve it but I'm pretty stumped.

I log into my gmail account and pop it down to my machine using fetchmail. All has been working fine until I noticed that I had not received any email all day. I checked my logs and found the following entries:

Nov 8 15:58:10 localhost fetchmail[510]: Server certificate verification error: unable to get local issuer certificate

Nov 8 15:58:10 localhost fetchmail[510]: Server certificate verification error: certificate not trusted

Nov 8 15:58:10 localhost fetchmail[510]: Server certificate verification error: unable to verify the first certificate

Nov 8 15:59:10 localhost fetchmail[510]: Unknown login or authentication error on lovell.mcilwain@gmail.com@gmail-pop.l.google.com

Nov 8 15:59:10 localhost fetchmail[510]: socket error while fetching from lovell.mcilwain@gmail.com@pop.gmail.com

Can any one tell me what this means? I don't recall setting up a ticket that I needed to use with gmail? I assume they are referring to ssl but I have not changed anything on my system between yesterday and today. Is there a way I can find out where this ticket is so that I can delete it and try downloading another from gmail's site?

What messages do you get if you try to connect with a manual pop client (ie evolution or something) to gmail?

I did not try that because I didn't want to use pop but I guess I can tell it to keep mail on the server and try it out. I will repost in a minute or so with my results.

ok so I set up evolution to download mail via pop but to keep messages on the server... I was able to do that with no problem. It didn't give me any error and started downloading mail with no problem.

If I try using fetchmail on another machine that I have set up with the same .fetchmailrc file, I am able to log in and check to see how many messages without downloading them.

Nov 12 14:05:21 firewall fetchmail[28611]: 726 messages for lovell.mcilwain@gmail.com at pop.gmail.com (7121345 octets).

Ok this is weird.

I ran the fetchmail --keep command on the original machine and I got the following in the log file:

Nov 13 09:34:51 Mordor fetchmail[2572]: reading message lovell@gmail.com@gmail-pop.l.google.com :94 of 726 (6601 octets)
Nov 13 09:34:51 Mordor fetchmail[2572]: not flushed

This tells me its working (I don't know why or how)...

I ran the original command that I ran before (fetchmail --check) and I got the following:
Nov 13 09:35:03 Mordor fetchmail[2671]: Server certificate verification error: unable to get local issuer certificate
Nov 13 09:35:03 Mordor fetchmail[2671]: Server certificate verification error: certificate not trusted
Nov 13 09:35:03 Mordor fetchmail[2671]: Server certificate verification error: unable to verify the first certificate
Nov 13 09:35:05 Mordor fetchmail[2671]: 726 messages (95 seen) for lovell@gmail.com at pop.gmail.com (7121345 octets).

So even more weird is that, It tells me relatively the same errors but it still lets me see how many emails I have on the server... I am going to try running fetchmail and seeing if I can download my mail and see what I get.

Well I was able to download mail to my original machine. I am a bit dumb-founded as to what happened and why it happened for a few days. I did not reboot my machine or anything of the sort, I have not installed anything, so I don't know what made this problem happen. Im just happy that its fixed
