fedora core 5 package manager unable to retreve software information
I searched for this and found nothing! maybe its too simple.
Im using fedora core5 i did a http install. It runs fine, i used package manager before to install packages and it worked before but now when i run it it goes to start and then gives me the error fedora core 5 package manager unable to retreve software information and then quits ? Im trying to install java support. I like package manager becuase it finds dependencies and installs them if you try and do it manually you may hafto install a myriad of dependencies to no end. Can anyone help me with this, maybe i need to tell it to connect to a different server but how ? thanks zonemikel |
fedora uses yum. if you want a gui with it the install yumex
yum install yumex This link should help a little more including java inatallation. http://www.stanton-finley.net/fedora...ion_notes.html |

zonemikel, trying running "yum check-update" from a terminal window and see if you can capture any error message there. |
the fc5 packet manager also goes straight into the net to find stuff. did you have your internet connection switched on before starting add/remove software?

Ok ?
I know about YUM. Does yum install all dependencies and their dependencies of the desired app ? I dont think so. Package Manager is like the same thing you use when you install FC5 and it actually finds all the dependencies of the app and installs them with it. This is a MUST for me because a while back i tried to install some program for my ti-89 caclulater and just to install the program i had to install 4 dependencies and then for one of those depencdencies i had to install like 3 and for one of those i had to install 2 it was horrible it took me the entire day and made me think wouldnt this be easier on windows ?
and yes my internet was on. is there any way to get to the settings in package manager ? maybe the mirror is no longer working ? |

Your error message would indicate that either you have misconfigured your repository information, you were not on line, or the sites were down when you last tried. HTH, Jim |
thanks
Ok thanks ill look into yum then, i didnt know it took care of dependencies.

Ok i looked into pup and yum extender and it gives me the same error "unable to retreive update information" and yum extender gives something similar, so its nothing i can fix just by not using package manager. anyone have any ideas ?
update ... what i did was delete all those files that yum gets when it downloads from command line it was one of them that was messing things up |
