Fedora 16, all media players have sound, but no video
I just upgraded from Fedora 14 to 16. Now no move can be played.
Of the several media players I installed, including VLC, when I play DVD movies, I only hear sound, but no video on the screen.
At the end of the installation of Fedora 16, I got a message on the screen saying my video card cannot take advantage of the GNOME 3, and so it fell back to sth else. But I doubt that is related to my problem with playing movie.
Can anyone please share your solution to the issue?
When you say you upgraded, did you re-install or choose the upgrade option? The latter is not guaranteed to work: Fedora tell you not to skip versions, so 14 to 15 is OK, but not 14 to 16. If you re-installed, then naturally you've got to re-install the codecs; did you?

What are the codecs used in vlc? Maybe I need to install them manually? I thought they are already included in the gstreamer or vlc binaries. Am I wrong?
BTW, upon completion of Fedora 16 installation, I got a message on the screen saying my video device cannot take advantage of the new features in GNOME 3, so it fell back to something else.
I'm not sure if this is related to my video issue in mplayers. I have Matrix Millineum G450 Graphic card, see below. Apparently it is supported.

You should have gstreamer, gstreamer-ffmpeg, gstreamer-plugins-good, gstreamer-plugins-bad, gstreamer-plugins-ugly. Does the problem exist for video on the internet, like Youtube? If it's only a problem with commercial DVDs, then you haven't got libdvdcss: get that from http://atrpms.net/documentation/install/
If your graphics card is capable of giving a still picture on the screen, it should be capable of giving a moving one. The use of Gnome fall-back shows that its 3D features are not supported, but they're only needed for games, rotating cubes and the like.
All videos, DVD, youtube or anything else, none shows videos, only sound. And I keep seeing popup message showing totem-plugin gets killed when I try to open a news video in a Firefox.
fedora dose not use the VERY old ( for fedora) x11r86
/etc/X11
also that "driver" for the built in chip is in the Linux kernel
there is no need to install a different one for watching Movies
movies have nothing to do with the 3d chip
for a store bought dvd you NEED libdvdcss
VLC is the recommended program
for the average video you DL from the net
Mplayer is the best
Gmplayer is installed by default
I recommend the QT front end SMPlayer - it is in the rpmfusion repo
for gmplayer and VLC Install ALL the xine and gstreamer files from Mjmwired and go to the mplayer web site and grab the current codec package
all-20110131.tar.bz2
but the script Dangermouse made for NEW USERS, IS RECOMMENDED .
Autoplus was MADE for NEW USERS it will give you a selection to install EVERYTHING you need .
Thank you sooo much for all the tips. I followed them and installed all the recommended packages. But still none of the media players installed shows any video.
I think this is most likely related to my specific G450 Matrox graphic card. Maybe I should returned to the media players for Fedora 14, which were all working before I replaced it with Fedora 16.
But how can I install earlier versions? with yum, it installs only the newest version.
