Fedora 14 + XBMC minimal install (no desktop enviroment : gnome/kde/xcfe and etc.)

Hi guys and girls!
first of all merry Christmas! and happy coming new year!

I have the following question:
I have fedora x64 minimal install (done netinstall + minimal option when selecting packages)

What i want to do now is to install XBMC (if anyone has working boxee for fedora14 that would be awesome) without installing Gnome or any other desktop manager.
i've seen some guides for ubuntu but there is not much info that is related to fedora in this case, i think

i have atom+nvidia motherboard and the kmod-nvidia is installed.
now i need to somehow make it to start nvidia drivers start X (i would assume) and start xbmc.

If anyone could give an idea or a full blown guide it would be PERFECT. unfortunately there is not alot of info when it comes to multimedia and fedora, mostly all is done on ubuntu (including boxee, doughhhh)

no matter what you use some or most of gnome MUST be installed
Fedora is VERY gnome centric .Even on the KDE respin there is some of Gnome installed

but you always have the terminal only ( text only) install

there is
It states that fedora dose not and never will ship with any closed or Non gpl software .So is ships with almost no media codecs and limited media players .
What more has to be said than that .

there is a guide , someplace" for setting up a MythDora myth + fedora
but seeing as fedora has only a 13 month life span and every NEW version ( released every 6 months) is VERY different than the last
I for one would not want to reinstall a mythdora setup every 6 months .

The teapot does not come with tea, you add it there, and there are bunch of recipes how to prepare that wonderful tea.
That is the only reason why i use Linux: you can do anything you want with it, all you need is to experiment and/or to use some recipes to cook it just right for you and Fedora is no exception.
One can always skip some dependencies (you don have to install all of them). All i need to know what is the principle behind the installation of xbmc the way i want.

it would be easier if i knew what is that Ubuntu minimal install (if X is installed and other related stuff) so i could work my way up this way.

ok. so i have my XBMC running video is great nvidia works blah blah blah..

NOW!! a problem is the sound...

any idea how to make it work? i use HDMI for sound.

i've tried right away to alsamixer and etc. to no avail.

i had pulsaudio alsa plugin and with that there was no sound at all..
after i have removed it. i had a sound but it was just high pitched noise... nothing more. aplay -*.wav (for short) did not produce any sound either way.

any ideas?

fedora uses pulse audio
but most of the tools use gnome or kde

when you run
Code:
alsamixer
do you see one slider or many

is pavucontrol installed ? and working ?
Code:
yum install pavucontrol

So here is 'HOW-TO' to do a minimal Fedora + XBMC + Lirc install.

a post with better formatting is here: http://ncm-q.org/wordpress/?p=76

Firs this is first: Install Fedora. You can download the net install ISO for complete up-to-date fresh install.
Follow the Wizard prompts and partition your disk and etc. The last step is to select what to install.. Well, here simply chose the minimal option and hit next just wait for a bit and you are done with the hard part

Reboot and login as root (we are doing all as GOD ) and:
yum localinstall --nogpgcheck http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/...ble.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfr...ble.noarch.rpm
yum -y update
yum -y install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs glx-utils dkms
reboot
yum -y install Xorg xbmc hal xorg-x11-drv-evdev xorg-x11-utils xorg-x11-xinit xorg-x11-xinit-session
yum install alsa-firmware alsa-lib.x86_64 alsa-oss.x86_64 alsa-oss-libs.x86_64 alsa-utils.x86_64 python-alsa.x86_64
nvidia-xconfig
yum -y install nano
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
add the following:
for 64-bit
Section "Files"
ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia"
ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
EndSection
mv /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.xorg
for 32-bit
Section "Files"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
EndSection
reboot
________________________________________________________________________
check if you have your HDMI available
aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC1200 Analog [ALC1200 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC1200 Digital [ALC1200 Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

if you see the above then:
cat < /etc/asound.conf
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm {
type hw
card 0
device 3
}
}
___________________________________________________________________________
add a user:
useradd -m -g users -G audio,video -s /bin/bash your_user_name
as a user (su your_user_name):
cat << EOF > ~/.xinitrc
#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

exec xbmc-standalone
#exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# exec wmaker
# exec icewm
# exec blackbox
# exec fluxbox
# exec openbox-session
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
# exec xterm
EOF
again as a user (su your_user_name):
run
aslamixer
and unmute the spdif channels
now exit back to root and run:
alsactl store
Reboot and test > Login as user and run:
startx
You should have now super fast XBMC running
For those who are interested how to setup Lirc on your minimal Fedora ill be posting it here: http://ncm-q.org later this week (its very simple honestly)
Well thats all folks Happy New Year
