Feather Hard Drive Install Problem--Won't Boot X.

I just completed a hard drive install of Feather. Everything seemed to go relatively well. Initially, the screen was black on bootup, but I fixed this by editing lilo.conf to read vga=normal.

However, I can't seem to get into X Windows. Feather boots into console mode, which I guess is normal. (I'm a new Feather user, so I don't know). But when I enter

startx

I get

xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/knoppix/.Xauthority

a few times and then

unknown id: knoppix

Anyone out there had a similar issue?

Thanks.
