Suggestions:

Maybe graphics driver is not sufficient and you need to install drivers for your graphics card. Also, graphics may be freezing due to a combination of insufficient driver and when automatic updates are using up resources downloading repository update information. You may want to boot into single user mode (CLI) by hitting any key at the grub splash (ugly peacock blue screen) and appending a (1) at the end of the kernel line, with a space before it and without the brackets. Then either disable yum updatesd or let it download the data which can take a while depending on your connection speed, then reboot into graphical mode.
