FC4 complete freeze

Heya,
I ve installed identical installations of FC on two computers I use as servers, one is an old Proliant 3000, the other is a Sempron.

Now, Sempron works like a dream, and all seemed well on RH till I got to FC4, which freezes randomly, everything crashes, screen won't go on, mouse, keyboard, ping, console, WinSCP, nothing.

This happens after a few hours of work, or even after doing nothing for ages, I return to the office in the morining and find it crashed.

The servers are placed in a 18C vented room, so its not an overheating issue.

I have ripped every single non-standard card from the machine, so the hardware il old but standard and very stable.
None of the Proliant diagnostics reports any hardware issues.
The only wierd part I m running are two IDE HDDs on Software Linux RAID.

I ve seen that other people are having FC4 stability issues, I m running kernel version 2.6.15-1.1831_FC4smp.

I noticed that some of the people with issues are running ATI cards, and so am I, an ATI Mach64 3D RAGE II with default FC4 drivers.

Do you think it is a Kernel issue, a graphics driver issue, or something else?

Please help, its driving me insane.
If I can t solve it, I ll have to flush the server and try FC5, but I d really rather not do that...

Thanks Azh

Hi there

In such situations logs come in handy

you should try and see for some issues in the logs first

regards

Update.

I ve noticed that the freezing occurs when the computer starts running rsync on the RAID 1 hard drives.

Now, since I m assuming that rsync is pretty tested, can I assume that the issue is hardware with one of the HDDs (which would be great, I can solve it real fast, or worse, with Software RAID?

Any help at all will be usefull
thanks
Azh

hi there

Is this the dmesg output that you get after FC4 freeze?
Well i think that it won;t be possible for you to get the dmesg outoput at that time

So Do this

get the time when your system freezed last and look up and post the log w.r.t. that time from /var/log/messages

regards

Letme get something straight, is the Proliant or the Sempron server the problem? The dmesg you posted seems to be the one of the Proliant server (SMP PIII system?). Is that the one with the problem?

Well I am not able to look for any thing related to raid or rsnyc here

You need to lookout for other logs in /var/log which can give you more info on this
