FC 3 and booting from SATA drive

There was a much publicized bug in recent LINUX kernels that made booting from SATA drives problematic. I am currently using FC 2 and Kernel 2.6.5-1.358. I would like to upgrade to FC3 64 bit and get a newer kernel; however, I cannot determine if a fix for the SATA boot drive problem has been implemented in the most recent version of FC3. Does anyone know? I have a Gigabyte K8NS Pro motherboard with an Athlon 64 bit CPU and .5G of RAM

Thanks!

facing boot problem

iwas facing a similar problem and i guess it was due to sata disk.

I was trying to install 2.6.10 on RHEL4 (2.6.9-42 kernel). I get the following error while booting.

Mounting root filesystem
mount: error 6 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
Switching to new root
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount /initrd/dev failed: 2
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I am working on a system with sil-3112A sata chipset integrated into the motehrboard. I could compile 2.6.10 kernel successfully

My grub.conf contains the following entry corresponding to the newly compiled kernel.

title linux
root(hd0,1)
kernel /bzImage_2.6.10 ro root=/dev/sda3 rhgb quiet
initrd /image-2.6.10.img

I tried compiling sata_sil and ext3 both as modules and into the kernel. I got the same error in both cases. Any ideas??

Wink Sata bugs fixed in new kernels

Just since Kernel 2.6.17 if i remember well, anyway from later ones of course sata bugs have been fixed..and i suggets you to copy all the important things, format and installing a new distro without losing time and becoming mad in upgrades and new kernels installations, fedora 7 comes from Red Hat too and is very good, has kernel 2.6.21,kvm integrated,i use it,it's the one i prefer for hardware recognition,i upgraded it to 2.6.22 by yum very easily and runs as a Porsche Carrera,so i suggest to install it.

Anyway.do as you prefer !

Bye and Good Luck !
