I am looking for a new X, what is your favorite x window system?
What is your favorite x window system for speed mainly and then any other reasons?
I am looking to install a new X windows system since gnome is so slow on my computer and I have heard that blackbox and fluxbox are quick. Any others or ones you prefer? Let me know why too, thanks. |
Hello.
I like to use WindowMaker for speed. It works very well on my old Dell Latitude CPi laptop. The user-interface is very simple, with little clutter and no frilly graphics (except for a few icons here and there). Instead of a "start button", WindowMaker has a right-click menu that holds everything. It loads very rapidly. No more waiting on that Gnome splash screen. It is very customizable. And, it has a menu effect similar to ones used in Microsoft Encarta. When you select an item, it'll blink for a short time. I think it looks cool. Next in line is IceWM (at least in my opinion). I never really cared for Fluxbox or Blackbox because they just don't "feel" good to me. Anyway, that's all I have to say. Good luck! |
I went to fluxbox for now, but am flexible. How did you find fluxbox for against windowmaker? Especially loading speed?

Nobody should be posting threads like these for awhile - I just saw one on 'favorite distro' and now there's this on 'favorite gui' - the LQ Member's Choice Awards are going on right this minute in the very top forum - that answers all these questions.
But, yeah, fluxbox. |
Thanks I didn't see that earlier. I will look.

Just saw another one on KDE vs. Gnome - that one got closed. In the polls, there's actually two threads - one about window managers and one about IDEs. If you're looking for people's opinions on the faster lighter stuff, be sure to check out the wm one. :)

I prefer Fluxbox myself. Next in line is definitely IceWM, which, as stated earlier, "feels" better than flux. But fluxbox looks EXTREMEMELY sexy with a nice theme combined with artwiz fonts and transparent xterms. A fluxbox desktop can truly be a work of art if you're willing to work a bit (but definitely not as much as you'd have to in IceWM)

I gotta say I prefer XFce over all these wm's mentioned. I have used black, hacked and flux boxes, but I find XFce4 to be the fastest. Although it does have a slightly larger footprint it seems to more efficiently use resources then others . Just my humble observation, no real bench marks to prove it. Good Luck!

AfterStep
AfterStep is awesome! It's really fast and looks great
http://www.afterstep.org/ But, if you are new to linux or don't want to bother with setting stuff up you may not want to use it! Hope I helped! |
i use windowmaker. it's fast and slick. i love it.

All I can say is to try a bunch of them and see what you like. Of course, you'll probably have to spend a few hours fiddling with each in order to see what they're capable of. I used KDE for a while; then Gnome for a long while; then tried Fluxbox and loved it, and finally I'm settled on Blackbox (since I never used the extra features of Fluxbox anyway). Tried XFCE, IceWM, and a few others but I think I've met my match.
