fatal server error

After a force quit because Open Office locked up, I am unable to log into KDE under my user name. Logged into "fail safe" and got a terminal, typed startx and got a message: fatal server error. server is already active for display, if this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.xo-lock and start again.

Interesting (to me) I can log into root then switch to my user account and have full use of my files.

Any idea how I can get KDE to load directly under my user name?
