Question Fatal error starting X

Hello. I am having problems starting X. I run 'xinit' and get the following error...

XFree86 Version 4.3.0
Release date: 27 February 2003
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.21-0.13mdksmp i686 [ELF]
...
using vt 7
(EE) No devices present
Fatal server error: no screens found
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 9 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Here are the contents of my /var/log/XFree86.0.log

_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener:...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

fatal server error: Cannot establish any listening sockets. Make sure an X server isn't already running.

I checked ps -Alf and didn't see anything *X* stuff. I'm not quite sure where to go from here. My XP partition won't boot anymore and I need to use Mandrake to troubleshoot it.
(tired of typing 'cd "Documents and Settings", cd "My Documents"

Thanks a lot everybody!!!

Bill

Doh! The top xinit error message should say "after 0 requests" instead of 9.
