fastest window-manager (please post)

Which do you think is the fastest window manager?

Why is it fast? Does it load fast at startup? Does it start applications fast/are it's applications fast? Or is it because costs very little energy/movements/clicks to get where you want? Or is there any other reason why you think that specific window-manager is the fastest?

I'd love to hear you opinions!

Fluxbox loads in 2-3 seconds. Applications open as soon as you click them. Internet is blazing fast. Uses very little RAM :-)

No freezes, very customizable.

not a particuarly comprehensive list... kde and gnome are not meant to be fast, so quite why they are even listed i don't know. Also they wre not Window Managers at all. there are plently of super lightweight window managers like pekwm, ion, twm...

it's hard to list them all, there are hundreds of windowmanagers! I know I've missed a lot, of course I have. Put kde and gnome between them just to see if any-one would vote it for some kind of reason. At the end they are the best known window-managers around.

Although I like GNOME better, I must say that Fluxbox is the fastest that I have used. However, technically GNOME is not a Window manager, instead it uses Metacity or Sawfish to draw the Window borders. So really, putting GNOME isn't technically correct.

hmmm...I used icewm and I don't remember how fast it is because I got rid of it quickly. I thought it was ugly as sin. I'm a die hard fluxbox user though xfce is quick and it has that gnome feel to it(sort of).

Pwnz3r, I dig your sexy framebuffer. I believe acid_kewpie posted a nice frame buffer shot a while ago but I can't seem to find it.

Saying "afterstep/nextstep" demonstrates a misunderstanding of what NeXTstep is: it's an operating system with its own PostScript display windowing system and related applications. It is not a window manager.

Having said that, it runs very well on a 25MHz 68030 with 16MB RAM.

Thanks for digging my framebuffer. I dig your screenshots too. Here's a link to the wallpaper I used if you want it.

As for GNOME and KDE, GNOME's meant to be more highly functional than anything, and KDE is even more so which makes it win the slowest DE ever. lol

the fastest might be the more basic, twm, but not very efficient for a desktop user.
aewm++ is fast and lots other ones.
blackbox, all its sons(hackedbox, fluxbox, openbox) and derivatives(pekwm,...) are fast

every window manager able to run without without a desktop is faster than kde,gnome,xfce,etc...

most of them window managers don't have desktop icons but you can use applications to support it like rox filer , rox-session, dfm, etc...

you will use your mouse for sure, i wouldn't say it is complicated.

my two latest screenshots - hackedbox and fluxbox

Sorry, here and there I am probably mistaken by what is a windowmanager or not. I really have done a bit research before starting the poll...

So someone thinks kde is fast. Interesting...

KDE 3.2 is surprisingly fast, Konq takes about 1 to 2 seconds to load. Internet is very fast. The intial hit for speed with KDE for the Libs, and after that and your good to go.

I never was keen a minimalism.

Suprisingly fast, yet still slow and extra bloated. I hate having a lot of programs, especially when I don't use a lot of them. GNOME and Fluxbox are simplistic and nice to use. KDE was just a grand waste of space to me. However, we all like certain things and therefor it's perfectly okay to like tons of programs that you may or may not use ever.

I voted fluxbox because I use it regularly and it is very fast for me in all areas. kde and gnome are desktop environments and neither one is fast at all in my opinion if you use the default setup. I have used gnome with openbox as window manager and was quite a bit faster but still not as fast as most would like.

I too feel that fluxbox has got the features to be the #1 window manager...It loads within 2-3 seconds.....But I also feel that as a complete Desktop environment, GNOME fares the best becos of the following reasons:

1. Quite fast to load ( cant compare it with fluxbox's speed, but otherwise its ok)

2. Ability to launch programs in four ways

---- (a) From the Main Menu ( present in fluxbox )

(b) From the Panel (Missing in fluxbox)

(c) From the Desktop area (although possible, but quite irritating to do that in fluxbox! )

(d) From the 'run' section of Main Menu... In GNOME, previous commands executed are present inside that drop down list box..so I can just click on the drop down list and select that path again ..( but in fluxbox, I have to type the entire path of the command every time I want to run something)

3. Also, GNOME is better in terms of eye-candy...and it dosent become slow even after one applies colors and themes to it. ( fluxbox is good in looks too, but still GNOME seems better here..)

I have listed few reasons above that make me feel GNOME is better, however, I have voted for FLUXBOX becos of its speed and good looks. I like both fluxbox and GNOME...

Regards,

amit
