2x video playback (xine, mplayer - even after reinstall)
 

i have about 20% faster playback of all media on my computer since i installed a bunch of updates on my Mandrake 9.2...

Same is true for mpg videos, but wmv, mov, and divX are about 100% faster...the problem presists for xmms, mplayer, and xine, so it has to be some system-wide thing...what could this be? somebody pls help me...

what problem are you talking about? 20% and 100% faster playback istn something to complain about? im assuming your talking about a problem that came up in another thread? if so its best to keep this discussion in that thread, if this is a separate question please clarify

hm...i searched the board for this issue and could not find it...

and as far as complaining: 100% faster playback means that videos play twice as fast as they should...meaning they are high-pitched, and like im fast-forwarding...thats bad, not good...

ahhh i understand now...i was under the impression that you had had a problem earlier and your video playback was slow sorry for misunderstanding you and assuming by faster playback you meant less loading time i wish i could help you with your problem but i dont know what it is, i would suspect that it has to do with how linux is interacting with your system clock but that is a VERY uneducated guess

very strange. Do you get the problem when you play mp3's using a command line player like
mpg123? How about ogg files? I'm just wondering since the formats you mention are primarily for windows. Maybe you should reintall the codecs (in the software removal tool of mandrake, look for packages containing the name win32; remove it/them and reinstall them).

unfortunately the problem is occuring with mpg123 too...

and i tried reinstalling codecs, no luck... :(

i too was thinking its something with the system clock, but since i know nothing about what that does or how it works, i cant figure out what to do about it...is there any way to set or edit how my sound card or sound system interacts with the system clock?

basically the problem seems like my system is playing back some media at a different sample rate then it should...and i really dont want to reinstall my entire OS just because of this...

reinstalling...

okay somebody explain this. I did the following:

1) clean install with format of evthing BUT my home directory
2) mandrake 9.2 without any w32 media codecs plays back my videos in the same unsusable 2x speed as it does with the w32 codecs
3) i have not yet installed divx, but it plays it back anyway - with similar problems...
4) dvd playback used to work before these issues, doesnt now...

i dont think mandrake comes with any of these codecs pre-installed, does it? how the hell is it possible then that im getting playback of media that i dont even have codecs installed for? ahhhh!

is there perhaps a built-in KDE media decoder for these formats that i dont know of? does totem media player install anything? ive looked around, but cant find anything that would cause this...

update:
1) i uninstalled kdemultimedia stuff, xine, mplayer, totem, gnomemedia...
2) i installed a clean xine and xinelib
3) and though as i understand they SHOULD only play back certain formats, in fact my basic xine installation plays back divx, mov, wmv - all at the usual 2x speed...

the problem is with an alsmixer setting, the "Multitrack Internal Clock"...but now the question remains that why is it that some playback is different then others? i guess eventually ill fight my way through this problem...
