fail to bootup after kernel upgrade

Hi there,

I am using Redhat ES3 with kernel-2.4.21-4.

I upgraded the kernel to 2.4.21-15.0.4, works prefectly.

But when I upgrade to kernel 2.4.21-20, or 2.4.21-27.0.4or 2.4.21-32, my linux will not be able bootup.

Error at bootup is:
VFS: Cannot open root device "LABEL=/" or 00:00
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 00:00

Can anyone help?

Cheers

Did you run LILO after your kernel upgrade, before you rebooted?

It pretty-much can't be LILO, since the kernel is already coming up. I gave up on "root=LABEL=" some time ago, and simply specify "root=/dev/hda#" (for some #) on the Linux kernel line.

Thank you for the correction.

Hi sundialsvcs,

Thanks for your reply.

I did try specifying "root=/dev/hda#" before, but no luck.

Cheers

Hi guys,

I use GRUB bootloader instead.

I read somewhere on the forum that someone had the same problem when they upgrade their kernel from 2.4 to 2.6.
Apparently, the 2.6 kernel could not understand the SATA drive, therefore they had to rename the etc/fstab entry /dev/hda3 to /dev/sda3 instead.

I also tried that, but didn't work for me either.

Don't know where gone wrong.

This error is driving me nuts!

Cheers
