extracting and creating .wad texture files

Hey guys and gurls... i almost stuck this in the gameing forum.. but its probably better suited here ?

basically a few questions on .wad file formats.

seems this format hasnt been used much since quake1 so i cant find ANY info on them.

i have downloaded replacement hi-res skins for quake 1.
but they were intended for a quake engine re-programmed to
load textures s jpegs from a ./textuer/ folder.

so what i want to do is take my quake gfx.wad file, extract the textures, then replace some of them with the enhanced hi-res textures, then put them all back into a wad file.

what software will i need to do this ?

ALSO... does any1 forsee any problems with a gfx.wad file containing old origonal low res quake textures AND newer hi res textures ?

the quake engine im running is by quakeforge

http://quakeforge.net

thanks for any info / links / opinions

Greetings qwijibow!

Long time ago I've been editing the textures of Quake 3 for a mod that I was doing with BSP format. As 99% of things in my life never work, the mod did not go so far, but I remember using wally to unpack .wad and replacing the textures. I have no idea if there's a Linux version of it though. Check out wally's site:

http://www.telefragged.com/wally/

Good luck!

thanX... i tried it... but it seemed it didnt work as i was hoping.

i created a wad file from the new textures.. and used the merge tool to merge the new wad file to the origonal quake wad in over write mode (just incase a few textures are missing)

it seemed to work...
even though the program could not display textures from the origonal wad.. but the game will not run...

not sure if its a bad wad.. or if quakeofrge engine will not allow it.

so its not sorted the problem, but im one step closer

nope... seems that program cannon ahndle it.
the replacement textures are not complete...
not all the quake textures have been replaced.

so when i convert the new textures into a wad, the
game fails to load will missing textures errors.

and the program is not capable of extracting the quake textures, nor merging the two.
so im still looking for a solution.

That's bad man. Sorry that I could not help you. I will ask some friends around and see if they know a way of doing it. Perhaps the guys who made some mods for Quake as Bid for Power might know a tool. Usually they are kind enough answering e-mails... usually Try sending them a message

thanX for the help though...
ill try different versions of that program incase its a bug...

but i half expect a corrupted gfx.wad file, my quake cd is anchant and usually lives
