setup? as in install? if so
Code:
tar -zxvf foo.tar.gz
cd foo/
there should be and 'INSTALL' file there documenting on how to install the program. in MOST situations it will tell you to:
Code:
./configure
make
make install
you can also look in the man pages (man tar) to see its other options if you want to compress a file/directory

Start out by checking out the Answers section of this site (link at the top right of every page), and especially this article by Jeremy. Then when you run into problems you can come back and ask us.
